Can you set up Calibre so it is possible to sideload books using my own WiFi network? Like if I wanted to move a lot of books between my devices and Calibre would run that as a job in the background.

If that feature isn't available at this point, is it something on a list for future upgrades?

Remove images from clearscanned PDF

Hi,

Sorry if this is too obvious to others but I am having problems with removing images from all the pages in PDF. Just strip them all off. Can this be achieved as batch job?

I know I can use Acrobat's tool to remove images one by one but this is pain when you have more than 10 pages to go. Books don't usually have less than 10 pages :)

Procedure is this:
1. I scan a page(s). Save it to color TIFF(s).
2. Combine TIFF(s) to single PDF.
3. Run Recognize Text. I choose Clearscan.
4. After Recognizing, clearscanned text is overlayed above Color TIFF(s)
5. I then remove "backgrounded" color TIFF(s) one by one.....

I am currently trying Adobe Acrobat X (24 days to go) and I am wondering if I am left to remove images one by one... This is actually crucial when thinking to purchase Acrobat or not. I so much love Clearscan

Publication Date or Copyright Date or ???

Brand new calibre user here with a question about publication dates. When downloading metadata for a book (say from Gutenberg), I am getting various publishers and publication dates.

However, those dates may not be for the version I have. Furthermore, for other older classics (like Beowulf) I am getting the date that the edition of the book I have came from, when what I think I want is the date it was originally written.

What are people generally doing in this regards? Leaving publisher/publication date alone and added your own metadata? Or is there a better way to handle this? Or am I just being ridiculous by wanting to track this information?

Reference 50 page notebook; 2012.05.23

It's not really a book, but a classic 50 page notebook.
(just a white page with lines)
It's made for devices with a touchscreen or stylus pen, preferably color screen (but not necessary), and 800x600 pixel resolution or higher.

You have 50 dual sided pages (100 screens) to make notes upon.
I actually made this for the Jetbook Color, but perhaps other devices will accept this format too!

I'll see if I can make more formats available.

See thumbnail as example page.

Hi all,
It's possible to get ebook position at the beginning of a chapter? Do you know where I can find example or implementation? Because I have a Kindle Touch and I can see position of page where I am, but not how much for the next chapter. I think it's usefull if a plugin can make position inside chapter name, so I can see it when read toc info.
Tnx a lot and sorry for my English.

Help with Semantics in Sigil

Hello,

I am having some issues with the semantics feature in Sigil version 0.2.0.

Sigil is automatically assigning the semantics of "Cover" to the first chapter of my ebook.

I uncheck it and then save it, and its reassigned again. This is an issue because those chapters aren't showing up in the Apple TOC in our iPads

Any help?

Thanks,
Myke

Hachette lets you read free chapters from upcoming books on Facebook

The BPHs are trying all kinds of experiments involving direct to consumer interactions:

---Quote---
Big-six publisher Hachette Book Group is making free chapters of upcoming books from bestselling authors like James Patterson and Michael Connelly available through a new Facebook app.

The app, ChapterShare, lets Hachette publishing divisions, authors and retail partners post free chapters of books on their Facebook pages. Readers can preorder the books directly from the page and share links to sample chapters with their Facebook friends.

“Publishers need to become application developers in order to connect writers and readers more closely,” Hachette COO Ken Michaels said.

I think we can now put to rest the idea that the BPHS "don't get" the Internet. They seem to be doing their darndest :

1. Not to be disintermediated.
2. To disintermediate you know who.
I've argued elsewhere that publishers might go direct to consumers with an app-centered approach. Looks like Hachette is on its way.

How to link to a XHTML Table in a epub.

The problem is that I have large tables that go over multiple pages in my epub. On the iPad this just looks horrible and instead of chopping apart the table I deceided to make a seperate XHTML Table. I start out generating the layout for my epub in InDesign. I then export the InDesign file to epub. After this I change the epub file extension to .zip and extract the folders so that I am able to edit the HTML doc in Dreamweaver. I am trying to link a word in the epub to an XHTML Table that I created seperately and have placed in the OEBPS folder of the epub. However when I open the epub on my iPad the link will not open the XHTML Table. I am assuming it has something to do with the file path changing when I rename the folder back to epub. The problem is that Dreamweaver will not let me link to a .zip or .epub file. And when I try the link that I have created within Dreamweaver it opens the XHTML Table. Any suggestions?

Biography Walpole, Hugh Seymour: John Cornelius. V1. 23 May 2012

Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole, CBE (13 March 1884 – 1 June 1941) was an English novelist. A prolific writer, he published thirty-six novels, five volumes of short stories, two plays and three volumes of memoirs. His skill at scene-setting, his vivid plots, his high profile as a lecturer and his driving ambition brought him a large readership in the United Kingdom and North America. A best-selling author in the 1920s and 1930s, his works have been neglected since his death

Excerpt
This book has been written in the form of a novel. I shall be perfectly content if many of my readers consider it only as a novel. And yet I would strongly maintain that it is more than a novel based on the life of John Cornelius. Cornelius enjoyed greatly to speak of himself and his life. He was the greatest egoist I have ever known and the least exasperating. For hours one could listen to him as he described his youth, his first strange days in London, his meetings with Carstang, Charlie Christian, Anne Swinnerton and many more, his marriage, his War experiences and the rest. He would give you conversations, word by word, dramatically impersonating the actors, would describe scenes in all their natural details. Many of these I copied afterwards into my notebooks.

Hi all - first-time poster here!

I'm looking for some help in removing/disabling the notes (links to references at the end of chapters) that appear in many of my ebooks

I use Calibre to convert to .mobi for viewing on my Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 using Kindle for Android.

However when reading on a small screen - and therefore turning pages frequently - I often mistakenly touch one of these blue "links" and find myself whisked off to another part of the book.

I then have to spend ages plodding back thorough the book to find my place!

I've read the Calibre manual but cant find any way to disable these links, or remove them completely during conversion, and Kindle doesn't seem to have any way of being told to ignore them!

Any help much appreciated!!
