Atsak v5 pro problems, I apologise, this is long.

I bought an Atskak V5 Pro on-line at their site. After I'd charged it up and had a play with it, I was in love with the thing. I then put attached the the device to via the cable to my computer. Nothing happened. Huh. The cable seemed a little loose where it attached to the device's port. I grabbed another cable which I knew worked and tried that. It still didn't work. I tried it on my partner's machine (he has windows 7 I have xp service pack 3). By this time I started to try everything I could no matter how stupid it seemed. I tried varying methods of booting the device, switching the computer on then switching the device on, keeping the device on while switching on the computer, etc. I turned off my virus checker. Nothing worked.

I then emailed support and waited, several days later I emailed them again, and waited. Finally, I emailed Sales stating that I could not get through to Support and that I was worried that the time I may take to get a refund may expire. They answered immediately stating that they would forward my email to Refunds. I told refunds that I liked the device and I was sorry that I couldn't get through to Technical Support and incorporated my second email to support in the body of the email, she forwarded it on to technical support.

Technical support replied saying to try it on another machine, I replied that I had done this and it hadn't worked. I also stated that I would prefer an exchange.

She wrote back that she didn't understand why I'd want to exchange the device when it didn't work on my machines!

I'm assuming that the port was damaged somehow in the manufacturing process, or that it is some kind of other hardware error. While packing it back into its box to return it I realised that I could not get the chip out of the device without tugging it (it slipped in easily). It is located right next to the port.

I could take this further and ask for an exchange, I live in Australia so each time I post it I'm $US40 out of pocket. Does anyone have any ideas?

Astak Pocket Pro or Sony PRS-300

Sorry for the thread number one billion about what to choose, but, that is what you get when you have a specific subsection :p

Anyways, I'm looking for a small ebook to gift to my mother, she likes to read, specially in the night, that's why i'll also ask your recommendations for a night lamp to go with the thing.
I'll also prefer it to be small so it can be carryable and allow her to read wherever she goes.

My price target is 200€, they are still a bit overpriced in my opinion, but there is nothing we can do there. As an upper limit, I'm willing to go as far as 250€ if you have an other suggestion that is REALLY worth it.

With that limit in mind, I can only recall those two. The Sony-PRS 300 for 199 € available at an spanish reseller, and the Astak Pocket PRO with an offer of 199 $ until the end of november.

Comparing those two feature wise, the Astak wins for a wide margin, but since screen quality, font quality and perhaps usability is more important on those things, I'll like to ask you how are you doing with these devices.

I've read a couple of reviews and the font seems to be a problem for the Astak, and perhaps some weak format support but considering firmwares comes and goes, I'll like to see if they improved.

Also, good availability of books is a plus.

Finally I'm from Spain, something which could prove troublesome to get the devices here, at least the Astak which, by the way, I've haven't found the way to order to Spain.

Hopefully I'll be able to order through a friend's company and avoid the clusterfucks the customs usually create with imports, specially with expansive stuff and perhaps avoid taxes on the way (tough that's definitely not the intention).
They tried to charge 110€ extra to an other friend of mine when he imported the PRS-600, luckily he managed to get away with "just" 40€ but man...

Well thanks for reading, :thanks: for your time.

B.M. Bower (1871-1940), author of western fiction based in the American West wrote Chip of the Flying U (1906).

Excerpt
Quirt Creek flowed sluggishly between willows which sagged none too gracefully across its deeper pools, or languished beside the rocky stretches that were bone dry from July to October, with a narrow channel in the centre where what water there was hurried along to the pools below. For a mile or more, where the land lay fairly level in a platter-like valley set in the lower hills, the mud that rimmed the pools was scored deep with the tracks of the “TJ up-and-down” cattle, as the double monogram of Hunter and Johnson was called.

For a mile or more, where the land lay fairly level in a platter-like valley set in the lower hills, the mud that rimmed the pools was scored deep with the tracks of the “TJ up-and-down” cattle, as the double monogram of Hunter and Johnson was called.

Free ebooks at Amazon?

I assume the free ebooks on Amazon.com are not available to us in the UK?

I can buy kindle books for the ipod touch which have a monetary value but couldn't find any which were free :(

Why oh why do I feel like we get a bit of a raw deal in the UK - ie pay well over the odds for things which our US cousins get so much cheaper or indeed for nothing!

Anyway correct me if I'm wrong please.

Amazon selling epub ebooks???

Just had a browse of amazon.com, and it seems that they are now selling epub versions of books to those without kindles.

e.g.

http://www.amazon.com/Eye-World-epub/dp/B002VBV1HC/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=digital-text&qid=1257619687&sr=1-4

and

http://www.amazon.com/Breaking-Dawn-epub/dp/B002RI9SC4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=digital-text&qid=1257620011&sr=1-1

Is this correct, or is it just amazon telling us that the kindle version originaly came from an epub? I'm a bit confused

Kindle in an ePub World

From the publishers point of view, the main purpose of ePub is to provide a single source format for their ebooks. Many UK publishers are ePub only, and now at least some US publishers are following suit.

On EInk Readers, ePub is now the dominant DRMed format, with the Amazon Kindle as the lone hold out. So ePub capable EInk Readers are seeing these ebooks exactly as the publisher intended, but the Kindle is seeing a version created by Amazon from the original ePub. On the other hand, the Kindle is a large fraction of the total market.

For confirmation that Amazon is accepting ePubs directly from publishers, see Pablo Defendini's post to his own Wheel of Time eBook Publishing Schedule (http://www.tor.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=blog&id=58210#70855):
---Quote---
Unfortunately, since Amazon handles the conversion from our source file (an ePub file, which is the de-facto open standard for ebooks, as opposed to their proprietary Kindle format) internally, after we hand them our file, the quality on Kindle editions leaves much to be desired (it's an automated process within Amazon, so we don't get to peek into that black box, much less get oversight once the file comes out the other end, before it's made available for sale). As a result, things like the maps, the formatting and such, that look great on all the other e-editions of the books, look bad or don't show up on the Kindle edition. For example, maps don't show on the Kindle sometimes, there is no table of contents, and drop caps look like Artanian's first letter on its own line. By all means, complain to Amazon. They listen to their customers much, much more than they listen to publishers, actually.
---End Quote---
Note that it is already common for a publisher to provide a single ebook format to its ebook distributors, with the distributors doing the conversion to other formats. What is new is the use of ePub as the initial format, and also a (laudable) refusal to dumb down the initial ebook to the lowest common denominator of all the target formats.

I have attached screenshots from the ePub version of The Eye of the World displayed by Sony's Windows ebook Library. This includes maps and each chapter's text starts with a dropcap. In the Kindle version the maps are missing and the first letter of each chapter is normal size on a line of its own. The initial cause for these issues is that ePub is a newer, more capable and feature rich format, than MOBI (AZW). MOBI simply does not support SVG graphics and drop caps. However, if you ran this ePub through Calibre you would get a much better MOBI that Amazon is selling. Calibre can convert SVG graphics to JPEGs and it recognizes drop caps and does not make them into orphans. The problem is that Amazon is using MobiPocket's ePub to MOBI converter for this task and it isn't up to the job. This isn't surprising, since Amazon has starved MobiPocket of resources.

In my view, Amazon needs to get its act together for ePubs. The best approach for consumers would be for the Kindle to add ePub to AZW and TOPAZ as a third fully supported format. This would be entirely consistent with Amazon's delivery model (they already have two formats after all), but this gets harder to do the more kinds of supported system types (iPhone, Windows, etcetera) get added. I think it is now clear that Amazon has decided not to do this, since the international Kindle was the obvious time to do so. A "good enough" approach would be to do a Calibre-quality transfer from ePub to AZW, and over time augment to AZW format to make it less MOBI compatible and more ePub like. I don't see any evidence that they intend to do this, since Calibre has been producing better MOBIs than MobiPocket for quite a while and Amazon has not either switched to Calibre or improved their own (i.e. MobiPocket's) converter. What I think they are doing is using their market position to try to get publishers to dumb down their ePubs. If all the ePubs produced are just MOBI clones, then Amazon has no need to do anything beyond what they are doing now. So far the pressure appears to be passive - publishers give Amazon good ePubs and get back crappy AZWs and if a reader complains I'm sure what Amazon says is that they will pass the complaint to the publisher (they don't say that the fault is in any way theirs). I don't think this strategy will succeed, but it is very damaging in the short term.

As you would see from the photos that I have preserved everything , the cover , the receipt(online) , the boxes , heck even the bubble wrap . It comes with the 1gb original sd card. *It would make it for a good gift if you plan to give it to somebody. *

The reader was purchased on Oct 2008. It has kept under great protection. I have lost the stylus( it would be bought as per harryt's recommendation)

Hello everyone.

I am new to posting and this is my first. I have recently got a Sony PRS 505 to save having to carry my heavy book around with me whenever I want to go anywhere. I think it is great and am now dabbling with ways of transferring some of my html etc documents into pretty lrf documents. Although I was a computer programmer in a previous life I am new to working with pcs (I am that old!) and so will probably be asking a lot of silly questions while using this site.

I can only appologise in advance for my lack of knowledge.

Anybody lose their ereader and get it back?

Just wondering if anyone has misplaced their ereader and had a kind soul return it. Yup, I left my entire briefcase on the train. It is purple paisley, so I imagine it will be found, and if it is not dunked in water because they think it is a bomb, I suspect I will get it back. Luckily, it had no work stuff inside. Unluckily, it had a print out of my bank statement, my credit card statement, and my kindle. My kindle is in a red Oberon case, with a business card taped to the inside of the case, and the back of the kindle.

How could I lose my entire briefcase? I decided to watch a movie on my ipod (A Woman's Face, with Ingrid Bergman) and do some charity knitting. The movie was getting really good (it has subtitles) when I was getting off the train, and I put my coat on, but not my briefcase (I wear it crossways across my chest) I am hopeful I built up a few bits of karma with the charity knitting. But everything is closed, so I cannot find out if my briefcase made it to lost and found until Monday. Good news is my assistant recently left his checkbook on the train, and got it back.

Anyone with a good story about a good samaritan to get me through the weekend?

well ive finally decided to take the plunge

hi guys

After much dilberation ive decideed to buy my first reader device a prs-600. From what I can see it is a excellent device and the ability to read pdf's is a big plus as ive got near 10gb of pdf of files that I haven't gone through simply because i find it hard to read off a screen.

I got a few question for you guys in in the forum, you seem all quite friendy chaps (except when it comes to discussions about glare lol)

The reader Ive bought, was used but under warranty. The previous owner had lost the stylus. I know its an hassle finding a official replacement, but I was wondering what other PDA, Smartphone styluses would fit in that hole. Without the device to hand http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?VISuperSize&item=380173609905 looks like it would fit. Im not too worried about aesthetics.. i would just like a pen to do short notes on my books.

second question relates to speed reading. Its hard to judge from the videos but how fast can you turn the pages? I currently read at 500 words a min and im trying to get faster, I used to use my PDA with repilgo and the reflowed text would match my scrolling speed. I know the sony is a bit different but is there any way to adjust the speed of a page turn if i need to?

third question has been asked a thousand times but I wll ask again as i haven't heard a satsifactory answer. Bearing in mind I was previously doing the majority of my ebook reading on a device half the size, will keeping the reader in portrait mode reduce my visbility? Im used to reading extremely small text and I dont find it an eye strain (funny because im extremely short sighted otherwise)

Im gonna embed a typical pdf in my collection and could someone show me how it would look on the screen? thank you in advance
